EXTRA CREDIT---COMMUNITY HOURS

Miami-Dade College students, staff and professors gathered to celebrate and promote all the activities taken place at the college. This event occurred on Saturday, 14th 2007 at Westland Mall. Its objectivity was to promote and excel all the courses offered at the school such as: vocational, credit (Associate in Arts, Associate in Science) and also English as a second language. The course last mentioned is essential to our community for many immigrants come to Hialeah.
My expectations were various in regards to the event. I expected great activities for teens which included games, but also learning events. The community was told all the activities which occurred at Miami-Dade College which I also expected. Potter’s pod cast brought a lot of kids into the scenario. I did not expect the pod cast to be on the college website, neither the professor to be one of the witches.
There were diverse activities which promoted the school. Involvement of students was vital to contribute to the success of this event. Kids’ faces painted reflected the harmony of the environment. Giving out flyers, promoting and informing the Hialeah neighborhood, I and other colleagues contributed to the purpose of the event.
It is essential every little support we aim to our community for its educational success. The higher our educational expectations for our local society, the more dedication we are to give. It is never too much or too little. It is the success what makes our endeavors a great path.

Week 11 Filling Station

In chapter Sight and Insight reflects the perspective with the real world. Elizabeth Bishop, the author of Filling Station, takes a look at the Gas Station to appreciate the beauty of the world. The writer describes with adjectives all dirty things of the gas station such as: "Father wears a dirty, greasy sons, grease-impregnated wickerwork, wicker sofa, dirty dog". Presenting all these images, Elizabeth gives an ugly picture of the gas station; however, everything changes when she mentions, "doily". The author talks about a father and the son, but does not mention mother. She is referring to something divine. She is comparing the Gas station with Earth (our world). There is some divine presence in the world. In our world and everything we do there is always beauty. No matter how something may look, it is the beauty of a simple flower that makes the world unique and beautiful.

On Not Shoplifting Louise Bogan's The Blues Estuaries Comments

Poem "On Not Shoplifting Louise Bogan's The Blue Estuaries" written by Julia Alvarez is a critique about shoplifting. It presents an ethical problem which is stealing. The scene occurs in Campus bookstore where any student could get a book and read it. She is reading the book which consists of unfamiliar and simple poems. These poems are written by an unknown author. The cover of the book is swans which is a symbol of beauty and art. She is inspired by these poems to write. For a moment she thinks of taking the book; however, she decides not to steal it. The reason for her of not taking the book is maybe because she wants to become a writer and not a thieve. The book was a reflection of a mirror for she decided to put it back for its beauty. She had a moment of guiltiness. If she had taken the book it would have destroyed the message of this poem. Besides, by leaving the book at the Campus, she left the book for others to read and enjoy the beauty of that unknown book. All in all, this poem leaves us with a great message to let others enjoy the greatness of a book. Stealing is not the key to succeed, but the endeavor of darkness and fatal path.
